Haircuts and happiness

Alright, y'all, here is the new 'do.

I had to leave before Velvet had her highlights done, the the cut was wicked cute. Hers was shorter in the back and longer in the front, kind of an A-line bob. Something like that.

Not much to report. Went out to lunch with some friends from ATA, and it was great to see them. I'll probably be going to the next game day that they have (they hold them at lunchtime, a group team-building activity which I always enjoyed while working there).

I think the plan is Jess and I are going to meet up with mom and Jim tomorrow for bowling. We haven't bowled since...October? Maybe September. It's been awhile, to say the least. Mom had a stellar couple of games last week, so she is probably going to kick all our booties!

Arrived safe and sound

As you probably guessed, we made it back to Utah safe and sound last Wednesday. Pretty much we've just been unpacking and trying to figure out where to put things. We helped Mary and Gerry move some items out of the basement today and it's crazy how much space it opened up!

Jess started work on Monday and so far isn't too enamored of it. He'll enjoy it more when he actually gets to do some work and not just training. I guess his old boss from the other queue he was in saw Jesse in the building and told Jess he'd be more than welcome back on the Marriott team. Not sure if Jesse will end up sticking with Microsoft or go back to Marriott. I know he's still really hoping for at least one of the city jobs to come through.

I've been applying for jobs like crazy for the past couple weeks, and not a peep. Applied at a few more UofU jobs, and one with the county, and tomorrow will fill out paperwork for a school district job that sounds promising. Keep your fingers crossed!

On another note, I'm meeting up with mom and Vel tomorrow and I'm trying to figure out what I should have mom do to my hair. It's been 4 months since I've done anything (wouldn't go to anyone in Oregon, didn't want to pay!) and I'm trying to decide if I want to grow my hair out again or chop it really short again. I seem to swing back and forth between the two extremes. If I leave it at the chin length it's currently at, I may play around with some of those neat clip-on hair extensions in the funky colors. However, if I cut it really short, I won't have to do much with it, and I'm a fairly lazy individual when it comes to doing my hair. When my hair is long, it's very pretty when I curl or braid it, but usually I just throw it up in a sloppy bun/ponytail. At least when it's short it has its own style without much prodding from me. Who knows. I sent my mom and sis a couple photos, so they'll help me decide tomorrow.

Call it what it is!

I was trolling through the pets section of Craigslist, and I must say, enough with this "rehoming fee" nonsense! Call it what it is; you are SELLING your pet. I'm not judging. Sometimes you have to let a pet go, and you'd like a little compensation for whatever reason. But let's be honest here, very little effort is put forth by the original owner when it comes to trying to find the pet a new home. A couple key strokes and one photo later, and voila! Your ad is created. Then the new owner comes to pick up their new pet. I highly doubt many people spend so many hours trying to find a good home that they need the rehoming fee to compensate for their various hours spent.

We don't ask for a "rehoming fee" when trying to get rid of a couch or an old table set...it's the same thing, people!

Let's band together and boycott this phrase, shall we?

Alrighty, folks. We've changed plans once again, and are now back to our original course of action, staying with Jesse's parents. I am completely ok with that, because hopefully we can build up our finances in a couple months, and find a house of our own. I have the truck rental all scheduled, now I'm waiting to hear back from a storage facility and we need to book Jess's plane ticket. We have to wait on the ticket for a couple days because we're still not sure about when he starts work.

How many of you out there are following the low calorie vs. low carbohydrate wars out there? Man, people really love their dogma, whichever side they are on. I, as most of you know, fall on the low-carb side of the line. The New England Journal of Medicine recently published a two-year-long study comparing the macronutrient differences on a low-calorie diet. Their conclusion? That no matter which ratio of macronutrients you eat more or less of (proteins, fats, carbs), low-cal is the answer to all. (You can read the original article here.)

There are so many things wrong with this study, I don't even know where to begin! Anyway, the Today show and various others picked up this "study" and ran with it, touting it as a great study that "proves" low calorie is the way to go. This is a great disservice because for people who don't want to take the time to do the research for themselves will take this study as gospel.

Now, finally, some well-respected voices in the medical community are speaking out about this study. You can read Fred Hahn's article in the Huffington Post here. Michael R. Eades also wrote an article about the study; you can read it here.

It frustrates me that there are so many great studies out there that show the whole "calories in, calories out" mantra is not the best way to lose weight or regain optimal health. Anyone who wants to learn more about this should read Gary Taubes' Good Calories, Bad Calories.

Bad movie endings and more

I just finished watching Love in the time of cholera and I have to say, I'm none too keen with the ending. It wasn't that it was a bad ending, it was just that I wanted there to be a complete resolution between the characters, and there wasn't. For movie endings, I pretty much need a neat and happy ending to feel satisfied.

On the home front, turns out Jesse may not start work until next Monday, or even the following Monday. We wish we would have known that earlier, because then he could have still been here. I mean, we knew it was a possibility he wouldn't be starting today, just wishful thinking I guess.

Ellaree came over to visit for a little while today on her way through to Eugene. I love seeing her, she's such a cutie! She brought her dog, Kyra, and that dog was tear-assing around the house, it was pretty amusing. I wish I could have seen Ell more since I've been here, but she's a pretty busy girl and is living her own life.

Today was a fairly boring day, as were the days preceding it...hope things pick up soon.
